Third Traffic Science Section

The Third Traffic Science Section conducts research on vehicle dynamics, driving characteristics, vehicle safety, accident analysis, and accident investigations from the standpoint of automotive engineering.

Research on Event Data Recorder (EDR)

Actual acceleration deta (Two wave forms in the above graph)

EDR is a device installed in a motor vehicle to record vehicle and occupant information for a brief period before, during, and after a crash.
To use it for an accident investigation, the method of reconstruction of vehicle motion from EDR data is researched. Also, the reliability and accuracy of EDR data are examined.

Research on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Measurement of driver's eye fixation by driving simulator

Various in-vehicle devices that assist drivers are put to practical use. However, they may affect a driver's safe-driving performance.
The section conducts researches on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as a car navigation system and an adaptive cruise control system, using driving simulators.
