With the aim of preventing traffic accidents, reducing traffic congestion, and alleviating traffic pollution, this section conducts research and experiments on traffic regulations, traffic signal controls, and traffic safety facilities from the viewpoint of traffic engineering.

Examination of signal control by traffic simulation.
To prevent traffic accidents and to minimize traffic congestion, advanced and practical traffic signal control methods are being developed. The effects of the green, yellow, and red phases on traffic safety and efficiency are being investigated by observational data gathered from video cameras and by traffic simulation.

Estimation of NOx emissions on Route 16 and Route6 in Kashiwa, Chiba
An innovative system is being developed that estimates NOx and CO2 emissions on each road section using vehicle detectors. The system is a useful tool for effective traffic management because it allows us to identify the problematic road sections and times during which emissions are excessive.
