Explosion Investigation Section

The Explosion Investigation Section is responsible for examination and research concerning the explosion process, analysis of explosive residue, and evaluation of explosion power. A bombing incident or explosion accident at an industrial factory can cause personal injury and property damage. Such incidents constitute a serious social problem.

Analysis of trace explosives

The analysis of trace explosives using atmospheric pressure ionization, mass spectrometry, and a chemiluminescence detector has been applied to the identification of explosive residues from debris and the detection of hidden explosives. These detectors have sensitivity in the subnanogram range for explosives.

Evaluation of explosion power

Detonation velocities, fragment velocities, and blast pressure have been obtained to evaluate the power of explosives and energetic materials by using electrical Instrumentation systems and a high-speed camera. The explosion tests are carried out in the largest explosion chamber in Japan.
