Suspected Abduction Case of a Couple (Niigata Prefecture)
On July 31, 1978, Mr. HASUIKE Kaoru, 20, left home by bicycle, saying that he would be back soon. Ms. OKUDO Yukiko, 22, left her office after work, saying to her colleagues that she would meet Mr. HASUIKE Kaoru on that day. The bicycle was found in front of the public library a few hundred meters away from the seashore in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata. The Japanese police interviewed the persons concerned, obtained information in the neighborhood, compared this case with a similar one, and exchanged information with the authorities and agencies concerned. As a result of the investigations, it is believed that the couple were abducted by North Korea, and then taken to the country.
The family name of Ms. OKUDO Yukiko was changed to HASUIKE as a result of the registration of her marriage with Mr. HASUIKE submitted to the Japanese authority after their return on Oct 15, 2002.
For the purpose of collecting relevant information, old photographs (taken circa 1978) are used on this site.
The Police have obtained arrest warrants for a suspect commonly known as Choe Sun Chol, suspected to have carried out the abduction of Mr. and Mrs. HASUIKE, and for Han Geum Nyeong (called himself Han Myeong Il) and Kim Nam Jin as accomplices. The Police had them placed on Interpol’s wanted list. The Police also submitted a request to North Korea, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the extradition of the three suspects.
