Suspected Abduction Case of a Mother and Daughter
On August 12, 1978, Ms. SOGA Hitomi, 19, and her mother Ms. SOGA Miyoshi, 43, left home saying that they would go shopping. No news about them was obtained for 24 years until September 2002. The Japanese police interviewed the persons concerned, obtained information in the neighborhood, compared this case with a similar one, and exchanged information with the authorities and agencies concerned. As a result of the investigations, it is believed that they were abducted by North Korea and then taken to the country.
Ms. SOGA Hitomi came back to Japan on October 15, 2002.
For the purpose of collecting relevant information, old photographs (taken circa 1978) are used on this site.
The Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect commonly known as Kim Myeong Suk, suspected to have carried out the abduction of Ms. SOGA Hitomi and her mother Ms. SOGA Miyoshi, and had her placed on Interpol’s wanted list. The Police also submitted a request to North Korea, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the extradition of Kim Myeong Suk.
