Suspected Abduction Case of a Couple (Fukui Prefecture)
On July 7,1978, Mr. CHIMURA Yasushi, 23, left home by a small truck, saying that he would meet his fiancée, Ms. HAMAMOTO Fukie, 23. The truck was found with the key in the ignition at an observatory near the seashore in Obama City, Fukui. The Japanese police interviewed the persons concerned, obtained information in the neighborhood, compared this case with a similar one, and exchanged information with the authorities and agencies concerned. As a result of the investigations, it is believed that the couple were abducted by North Korea, and then taken to the country.
The family name of Ms. HAMAMOTO Fukie was changed to CHIMURA as a result of the registration of her marriage with Mr. CHIMURA submitted to the Japanese authority after their return on Oct 15, 2002.
For the purpose of collecting relevant information, old photographs (taken circa 1978) are used on this site.
The Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Shin Kwang Soo, suspected to have carried out the abduction of Mr. and Mrs. CHIMURA, and had him placed on Interpol’s wanted list. The Police also submitted a request to North Korea, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the extradition of Shin Kwang Soo.
